Roshanie Ross

for New Rochelle Board of Education

I am running for New Rochelle Board of Education because I passionately believe that we need to better educate all children of New Rochelle.  New Rochelle must continue to improve access to equitable educationprepare children for jobs of the future and with that earn the trust of the community.

From the community to those in elected office, we all have a great responsibility to our children.

The New Rochelle Board of Education must work to center the voices of youth, families, educators and community, to ensure a quality education for every child.

In the late '70s, when I was four years old, my family moved from Guyana to the US.  My mother enrolled me in the local public school, PS 119 in the Bronx and hoped for the best.  It was there that a teacher, Mr. Maisel, changed the trajectory of my life.  Because of his influence, I am living my American Dream.  All of our children deserve the same chance to achieve their dreams and it is the responsibility of our schools to provide them with the foundation to be successful.

PRIORITIES

I believe New Rochelle schools must continue to:

  • improve access to equitable education

  • prepare our children for jobs of the future

  • build community trust

Leading with equity

City School District of New Rochelle has long struggled with achievement and opportunity gaps by race and class. COVID-19 has further highlighted these problems. I am ready to serve to ensure that policies are passed with an equity lens, thinking first about the students who are left behind and hold our administrators accountable.

Preparing Students for the Future

The City School District of New Rochelle needs to prepare its students for the jobs of the future.  All students need both critical thinking and technical skills to be able to take advantage of new opportunities.  COVID-19 has also shown the need for a district focus on technology.  After decades of leading change and building technology in large institutions, Roshanie is ready to bring that knowledge to the New Rochelle Board of Education.

Students, Families and Educators at the Center

Too often, the most impacted people are left out of the decision-making process when it comes to budget and policy decisions within the New Rochelle Board of Education. I am running to ensure the voices of young people, families, and educators are central to the decision-making process, and that public transparency is a priority.

Given the ongoing impact of the coronavirus, our district will face unique challenges and opportunities in the coming years. My experiences as a parent, neighbor, and professional, as well as my vision for school system that provides educational excellence, make me an ideal Board of Education candidate.  I hope I can count on your support.
